Starlink is a low Earth orbit satellite network developed by SpaceX to provide low latency broadband to locations where access has been unreliable or completely unavailable.
Starlink will be available to New Zealand customers in mid to late 2021.
The network is currently in beta testing with speeds between 50Mbps and 150Mbps and latency from 20ms to 40ms. The speed is expected to increase to 300Mbps next year.
The main difference between Starlink and other satellite internet providers is the latency. Traditional satellite internet connections have latency around 1 - 2 seconds depending on the provider. This is a very noticeable lag, especially for voice conversations.
Starlinks latency is around 20 - 40 milliseconds. This makes it similar to most fibre broadband connections.
Starlink is ideally suited for remote parts of New Zealand where traditional internet and mobile coverage is limited.
The setup cost for a new Starlink connection is around $800.00NZD + $115NZD for shipping. This includes a self aligning satellite dish, wifi router and cables. The connection itself will cost you $160.00NZD per month for an unlimited data plan.
The setup process is pretty straightforward and it's possible to install it yourself, however there are always some people who prefer to get in the experts. Bcom has a nationwide team of installers ready to go.
